Tooth Anatomy

Teeth (dentes) are hard structures located in the oral cavity. They are used for biting and grinding food, contribute to proper speech, and also play an important aesthetic role.

Human teeth evolved from the placoid scales of fish and develop within the tooth socket (alveolus). They are anchored in the jaw and firmly surrounded by the gums.

Each tooth consists of three basic parts: the crown, neck and root. The crown is the part that protrudes into the oral cavity. The neck is the part of the tooth surrounded by the gums, while the root is anchored in the tooth socket.
