Dental Plaque
Dental plaque is a soft, yellowish and often barely visible layer of bacteria that accumulates on the surface of the teeth. It most commonly forms in areas that are more difficult to clean – particularly around the neck of the tooth, where the tooth meets the gum, and in the interdental spaces.
Plaque forms from food particles and microorganisms that produce acids. These acids gradually weaken the tooth enamel and can lead to tooth decay. If plaque is not removed regularly, it can also irritate the gums and cause gum inflammation (gingivitis).
Connection with Tartar
Minerals contained in saliva gradually accumulate in dental plaque. The plaque then hardens and turns into tartar. New layers of dental plaque can easily accumulate on its rough surface, which can worsen gum inflammation and contribute to the development of periodontitis (periodontal disease). In advanced cases, this disease can eventually lead to tooth loss.
How Can Dental Plaque Be Removed?
Dental plaque can only be removed mechanically, through regular tooth cleaning. The foundation is thorough daily oral hygiene, which includes:
-
brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a toothbrush
-
regularly cleaning between the teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes
-
using a suitable toothpaste
-
regular visits to a dentist or dental hygienist
Once plaque becomes mineralised and turns into tartar, it can no longer be removed through regular brushing at home. It can only be removed using special instruments during professional dental hygiene treatment or at a dental practice.
Preventing Dental Plaque Build-Up
The most effective prevention is regular and thorough oral care. Proper tooth-brushing technique, the use of interdental cleaning aids and regular check-ups with a dentist or dental hygienist help keep the teeth and gums healthy and reduce the build-up of dental plaque.
